Your dictionary does not seem to know much about grammar. In definition 2, if there is an object of worship (a celebrity), that would be a transitive verb.

I would say that there is a strong overlap between the two definitions, and that the second is derived from the first. I think therefore that 'conflating' is somewhat strong.
