You seem here to be using the word 'better' in the same sense as Gerald R. Baron in his current series (you are probably reading this?), i.e. something that makes us happier, feel more comfortable. He specifically says that he is doing this, rather than addressing whether something is true or not. I prefer to seek the truth, rather than something which helps me to feel comfortable.
