Regarding the birth narratives, I've read that the Luke account is based on that of an earlier prophet called Issa which can also be found in the Quran. If true, that would complicate the issue.

The marriage is important in that it makes Jesus seem more human. The Church wanted to insist on his divinity and therefore above such human matters.
