Thanks for your response. As you say, it doesn't really matter who says what. But only up to a point, i.e. as long as what we have is the true understanding. As the Buddha was supposedly the originator of this 'religion'/philosophy, it might be better to know what he thought about this significant question. I say this because, so it seems to me, Buddhism stands alone on this point. All other major religions have the existence of self within them. Hinduism has atman, Western traditions have soul, or some equivalent, e.g. Christianity, Platonism and therefore neo-Platonism, Gnosticism, Theosophy and so on. Certainly “ the notion of Anatta is a central concept in Buddhism”, but why should we accept the Buddhist viewpoint above all these others? It may make sense to you, and I respect that, but not to me.
