On the Egypt question, I don't know whether you buy into the Atlantis story, but according to Gurdjieff, who knew a lot having travelled widely to various monasteries, receiving much information there, the survivors of Atlantis escaped to three different locations. One was Egypt, another was Tibet. I forget the other one.

That would explain the connections, and move the source of the Mysteries back further beyond Egypt to Atlantis
