As you suggest, and as I've said somewhere in one of my articles, it is unlikely that we will ever get to the bottom of the Historical Jesus question for the reasons you state. I also don't think that we will ever have a consensus on methodology, since there are too many agendas. What we can do, however, is to show all the problems with Christianity as we now know it, and the associated texts. This is what I've been trying to do in all my articles.

Islam does of course claim Jesus as a prophet, one true to the Torah and Judaism, and therefore sees Paul as the enemy, the heretic who created a false religion. That is also a viewpoint that could be examined critically.

Islam, like Christianity, has different levels. Its deeper mystical level – Sufism – is very impressive.
