On the lines of what you're saying about meds, there's a brilliant comparison from the Transpersonal Psychologist Stanislav Grof. He says that if you're driving a car, and a warning light comes up on the dashboard, you don't go to the garage and ask them to pull a few wires so that the light doesn't show up (i.e. drugs). You need to work out why the light is showing up, why the suffering is there in the first place.
