You might be interested in my current series on Genesis:
I disagree with your statement: “There were ancient philosophers who did speculative 'science,' thinking that everything was fundamentally water, fire, air, or earth”. Just as you think the words heaven and earth in Genesis are symbolic in nature, so were these terms; they referred to spiritual creative principles, not to material manifestations.
