My favourite is the NRSV, although I haven't read the preface. It seems unbiassed, and it provides footnotes giving alternatives, and the original words being translated.

By the way, I once read a preface a long time ago (I think it was the Good News Bible) where the translators said that they knew that the word used for 'God' in Genesis 1 (Elohim) was plural, but they translated it as God because Christianity is a monotheistic tradition. Thus their translation helped Christians to feel comfortable and not ask questions.
