It depends what you mean by 'real'. No one can see these fields; they are assumed to exist, and I believe they do. But they do not seem to be part of the space-time world, rather create it.

So the next question would be, what creates the fields? If you are going to say, they just exist, then you have merely moved the question one stage backwards.
