I'm not sure of the precise history, but I'm guessing that the modern European translations are based on the Latin Vulgate, which was a translation of the Septuagint in Greek.

What happened before that is interesting, but please wait for the next articles.

In the bit you've highlighted here, I should probably have said European rather than English. Of course I'm only familiar with the English translations, but assume that German, French and others are based on the same mistranslations.
