I usually take the inner teacher to be what might be called the Higher Self (self according to Jung), or soul, i.e. a deeper aspect of one's own ego-self. In the case of Jung, Philemon definitely seemed to be an independent psychic entity, who was teaching him things he could not otherwise have known.
