But let's take one current issue as an example. Scholarly consensus is that the Gospels were not written by eye-witnesses. I sometimes hear Christians say that they were, but on the basis of no obvious evidence. So is there a credible piece of scholarship which argues the case? I'm not aware of any. According to Keith Michael at least, some churches are nevertheless still teaching that the Gospels were written by the named apostles.
