I think the most important issue is not how the text can be interpreted – many interpretations are possible - rather the intended meaning of the original writer.

Yours is a standard Gnostic interpretation. The ultimate consequence may be an ascent into consciousness and self-awareness, but that seems to go against what is said in the text, except that chapter 3 suggests that this is what is required to return to Eden.
