I assume by ‘empirical’ you mean up to the standards of science. The effect of anything metaphysical upon the material universe can never quite match up to what science requires, but can only be inferred from the effects, as Jung said. ‘Cultural transmission’ and ‘anthropology’ are explanations that scientists fall back on, if they are of the mind to reject the metaphysical. That doesn’t make them better, in my opinion.
