I do indeed recognise the irony. That was my intended implication, that (at least some) modern Christianity resembles the attitude of the Pharisees

I understand that you know much more about Christianity than I do. Is being saved the same thing as one's inner nature being transformed? What does faith in Jesus Christ mean in that context?

If what you say is true about Biblical Christianity, then it seems that some modern Christianity is out of step with it. There is much emphasis placed on outward behaviour, the most obvious example being in relation to sexual morality.
