A very interesting topic.

Before I start, let me say that I've never had the ego-death experience, although I would very much like to, as I perceive it to be an essential stage on the spiritual journey. I think it is the true meaning of being 'born again'.

So, I was surprised by some of your statements regarding the negative effects. You state these as facts without referring to any studies or surveys, although I assume you have access to some. Most of the literature I've read around this topic is very positive and says, for example, that the ego-death experience is life-changing in a long term way, usually in the sense that it radically changes one's worldview. There may well be problems of integration, obviously because returning to normal consciousness may seem somewhat tedious, when one has seen other realms and dimensions. Such problems are not impossible to overcome, however.

I'm especially familiar with the work of Stanislav Grof, who is very positive about the ego-death experience.
